The Cover of Taiwan Yearbook 2006The cover of Taiwan Yearbook 2006 features the five winning symbols of the "Show Taiwan to the World" online poll conducted by the Government Information Office between December 2005 and February 2006. Taiwan's netizens selected from among 24 different pictures the one they thought best symbolized their country. The results show that Taiwan's people take five things to most distinctly symbolize Taiwan (clockwise from top left): Taipei 101—the world's tallest building; Jade Mountain—the highest peak in Asia east of the Himalayas; glove puppetry—Taiwan's most characteristic folk art; Taiwan's cuisine, such as the red, round glutinous cake pictured here, which is called angguguei; and the Formosan landlocked salmon, an endangered species endemic to Taiwan.
