The Taiwan Yearbook provides the most authoritative information on Taiwan, including annual updates of major events, political and social developments, and statistics. The 2006 edition contains new facts, figures, and developments aimed at providing the clearest possible picture of Taiwan's recent conditions. The yearbook offers a comprehensive overview of most fields of interest concerning Taiwan. The 22 chapters provide details on history, government, national defense, foreign relations, education, economics, environmental protection, science and technology, relations with China, and other important aspects of Taiwan. In-depth essays, color photos, charts, maps, and tables assist the reader in understanding Taiwan in the context of 21st century globalization. The three appendices present a chronology of events in 2005, a timeline covering 1949 to 2004, and a comparison of romanization systems. Finally, the "Who's Who in Taiwan" section lists prominent leaders across the political spectrum and from all walks of life. With the exception of certain historical figures and established personal and place names, Mandarin terms related to Taiwan are rendered in Tongyong Pinyin, Taiwan's official romanization system since August 2002. The people and places of the People's Republic of China are transliterated using the Hanyu Pinyin system. To assist bilingual readers, the yearbook provides extensive Chinese annotation throughout the text. Unless otherwise noted, an exchange rate of NT$33.42 to US$1 has been used in financial statistics. Taiwan Yearbook 2006 is an essential reference on one of Asia's most dynamic societies.
